Council Camporee's a-Comin'

By now, you've surely heard that 2010 is the BSA's 100th year. It's an exciting time to be a part of the BSA story.

We should never pass up a chance to tell our Scouts how fortunate they are to be in this great program at this point in time. When you try, don't let their blank faces deter you. Recognize that they may not be able to appreciate the historical significance of this milestone … yet. But they WILL look back on this time on some distant day, and their perception of it will largely be shaped by you, their leaders, and the messages you relayed to them.

For instance, did you realize that the Boy Scout movement was certified by Guinness World Records during the last World Jamboree as the world's largest youth movement in history? And here we are, witnessing its centennial. I think that's pretty darned cool.

Here's an easy way to help your Scouts always remember this year in Scouting history: Register your unit to attend the W.D. Boyce Council's Centennial Camporee!

This is the main event our council is putting on to mark the occasion, and it would be a shame if any Scout missed it. The registration packet was handed out at this month's Program Kick-Off Meeting.

There are already lots of fun, exciting activities scheduled for Scouts and Scouters of all ages, plus many more still in the planning stages. If you're going to camp overnight - and Cub Scouts and families are welcome to do so - you need to get organized soon. Space is at a premium, and camping requests will be handled on a first come, first served basis. So plan your unit's participation NOW so you're all set for the Fall.

One of my favorite Lord Baden Powell quotes is:

"The most worth-while thing is to try to put happiness into the lives of others. "

Attending the Centennial Camporee is your perfect opportunity to make your Scouts happy by actively taking part in history. If you agree … I'll see you there!
